Considering Baptism or
Dedication for your child…

Considering Baptism or Dedication…

Welcome to Christ Church, and thank you for asking about Baptism or Dedication! This information will help answer any questions you have as you begin to consider what is right for you and for your child.

What is baptism?

The Christian church is described in the Bible as the family of God. Baptism is the sign of entry into a relationship with God, and becoming a part of the church community. So, baptism is not an end in itself, but is really a new beginning. It is suitable if you want your child to be a member of the church, and intend to bring them up in the Christian faith.

For the service to have any meaning for the church and the family, we therefore expect you as parents to be attending Christ church regularly on Sundays (and we would hope appropriate midweek activities like Carousel, Alpha, etc.) for at least 3-6 months before you and we explore the possibility of baptising your child.  This gives you an opportunity to decide whether to become members of the church family so that together we can help your child grow to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

So what happens first?

When a family first attends with a new born child, it is our custom to give thanks to God for the child and to pray God’s blessing on the family.  This is very informal and is called a Thanksgiving, and like baptism, takes place during our 10.30am service.

Please contact the Church Office in the first place on 020 8763 8291 (or email telling us your:
•    Names: parents and child
•    Address: you need to be living in the parish or be attending the church regularly to have a baptism at Christ Church – but we can help you if you are unsure about the parish boundaries, etc.
•    Telephone numbers, email, etc.
•    The names, age and sex of your child.

The Vicar, will then get in touch with you, and arrange a convenient date for a Thanksgiving as appropriate.

What preparation is required?

After the Thanksgiving, we then arrange for Baptism Preparation – normally a couple of members of the congregation who will arrange to visit you in your home over two or three sessions to:
•    Explain the service options: a service of Baptism or Dedication.
•    Go over the service.
•    Explain what the vows and promises mean in practice.
•    Offer support in other ways.
•    Give you an opportunity to any questions that you may have.

We also ask parents to join our next Alpha Course – an introductory course exploring the Christian faith – as a part of the preparation.

The Baptism or Dedication takes place within the normal Sunday morning services so that the church can share the promises made with the parents and godparents to bring their child up within the Christian faith.  Parents and God parents are expect to be able to respond to the word in bold – see the baptism service on the back of this leaflet.

When is it better not to baptise?

Baptism is not something which should be considered lightly. Because it marks entry into the family of God, it is the start of a long-term commitment. Your child doesn’t need to be baptised to come along to church or to the church’s children’s ministry (Sunday school), or to be married in church. Nor do they have to be baptised as a child, since people of any age can be baptised.

If you are unsure about whether or not you want your child to be Baptised, or do not yet feel able to make the promises contained in the Baptism Service, a Dedication may be most appropriate for you.  Many parents find that this is what they want for their children. We ask for God’s blessing of the child, whilst leaving the decision about baptism for the child to make themselves when they are older.
